Minuteman Press: How one small franchise goes above and beyond digital print
Minuteman Press is more than just a digital print and copying service. Located in Cardiff since 2010, the small, friendly and highly knowledgeable team go above and beyond when it comes to exceeding customer expectations and developing a responsible business model that runs through everything they do.
“If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the years, it’s that no amount of technology can replace the human touch. That’s why we hire only the most qualified individuals to serve on our team. We look for people that share our philosophy that your business is our business.”
Like many businesses in the print industry, the team at Minuteman Press recognises and embraces its responsibility to identify and reduce any adverse impact on the environment resulting from its production activities particularly in respect of energy, purchase of approved sourced paper, waste paper, waste toner containers and carbon emissions as a result of delivering customer orders. However, this is just a small part of the wider work they do.
The team are passionate and proactive in promoting environmental awareness, conservation and a sustainable way of manufacturing print and have a continuous development programme of improving processes, product ranges and continually work towards offering more environmentally friendly choices to our customers. Many of their customers including Cynnal Cymru and Size of Wales have become key partners, working together on a range of community and environmental initiatives to help promote a collective sustainable agenda.
In 2016 Cynnal Cymru worked in partnership with Size of Wales to promote Go Green Day, to help raise funds to protect tropical rainforests the size of Wales. Cynnal Cymru approached Minuteman Press to take part as Go Green Champions to help fundraise for the campaign. Not only did the team rise to the challenge, but by the end of the week the Manager and keen illustrator Louise, was already working on a specially designed and illustrated Go Green day colouring book. The rainforest themed colouring book was distributed and sold locally helping to raise money for the campaign. In addition the Minuteman Press team helped to spread the word by holding a mini book launch in the Cardiff Bay premises as well as sharing photos and tweets online. In November 2016 the Minuteman team received a special Sustain Wales Award in recognition of their exceptional work in championing the Go Green Day campaign.
They are compliant with legal environmental requirements and are committed to put in place a recognised Environmental Management System and are committed in reducing environmental impacts in relation to pollution, carbon footprint and waste paper.
They trade only with paper and board merchants who have evidenced compliance with applicable environmental legislation and requirements. The stock used by Minuteman Press is sourced only from sustainable forests managed by European environmental legislation compliant organisations. Products are Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) www.fsc.org certified and meet requirements of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) Chain of Custody www.pefc.org.
They strive to make their own business practices less damaging on the environment, particularly in respect of the packaging and distribution elements of their organisation. As part of their environmental responsibilities, they carefully plan their delivery services to customers and reuse packaging where practical on their outward bound deliveries.
Where ever possible they use carbon emission free delivery transport methods to their customers and limit fuelled transport methods where ever possible. They use a Dragon Couriers, a local courier for the larger local drops and combine deliveries to be done in a geographical order. They operate a car share scheme minimising transport requirements and maximise the use of technology by engaging in conference call facilities for meetings.
They recycle all waste products in line with the Local Authority Waste Recycling guidelines and aim to ‘Reduce, Reuse or Recycle’ waste products where suitable and practical. All waste toner cartridges are recycled using approved contractors. They choose environmentally friendly consumables for the day to day running of the business and took part in Fairtrade fortnight.
Their original toners (press) are made using material which include biomass and are made from a plant/vegetable based resource. This contributes to achieving CO2 neutrality during recycling and helps reduce the overall carbon footprint.
Their overall approach is to collaborate with their employees, suppliers and customers to identify, assess and minimise the environmental, health and safety impacts resulting from their manufacturing operations, their products, and their product packaging.
