What can people do to keep their homes warm and save on their fuel bills?

Blaenau Ffestiniog’s Green Town organised The Thermal Village Show at Ysgol Tanygrisiau on 4 February.  There was a range of experts on hand to give advice on all manner of home heating issues like heating system controls, insulation and the best tariff for your needs.

The Green Town Project is currently exploring issues associated with heating homes that are off the gas grid in Tanygrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog. More than 80 houses in the area have been visited to find out whether there are any ways people can change their behaviour to use only the heat suitable to their needs.

Houses in the Tanygrisiau area are classed as hard to heat and hard to treat as they are not connected to mains gas, and are of traditional solid wall construction, notoriously difficult to insulate.  The Green Town has been working closely with Gwynedd Council and Tai Eryri to  submit a bid for ARBED 2 funding that will, if successful, provide a means for houses in the area to upgrade their insulation and possibly install green technologies.

Iona Price of the Green Town Project said: “Improving the thermal efficiency of a building is important, but The Green Town Project has secured funding from the Welsh Government Support for Sustainable Living grant scheme to look closer at how people’s behaviour effects the way they control their heating at home. We are looking at people’s behaviour in their own homes to see if we can help them change the way they use their heating system to be more efficient.  We’re also very interested to see if our advice is followed, and if not, why not.”
