Cynnal Cymru-Sustain Wales has recently submitted a report to the Welsh Assembly Government on the Sustainable Development Scheme and Action Plan. The report primarily focuses on looking ahead to the next 4 years and beyond at what action WAG (and others) can take to drive the SD agenda forward in Wales.
Our aim was to gather evidence from civil society to inform the review and remake of the Sustainable Development Scheme and Action Plan in 2008 in a way that also involved a wide range of stakeholders in debate and dialogue on sustainable development.
In order to gather evidence we designed a rolling programme of events, between 2005 and 2007, that would reach out to these informed audiences. We looked at economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and new trends and challenges facing Wales and asked stakeholders to consider the following:
This proactive piece of work was designed to inform WAG policy-making at an early stage, whilst allowing civil society an opportunity to raise its concerns instead of simply responding to agendas already set by WAG or other bodies.
The title of the report is “Transformation Nation”, reflecting the radical nature of the change required. The report contains ideas and recommendations for transforming Wales to a low-carbon, low-waste country that plays its part in the global effort to live within environmental limits and ensure a strong, healthy and just society for current and future generations.
