20 September | Education for Sustainable Development: Achieving SDG’s

Education for Sustainable Development has been officially or tentatively integrated into formal educational programmes since 2008.

This event is linked to a follow-up event planned for Summer 2018 both of which seek to identify clearly and honestly the problems and challenges faced by mainstream and non-mainstream practitioners in the effective delivery of education for sustainable development. The event considers how mainstream curricula in the UK and internationally may be refocused to accommodate sustainability goals as recently outlined in the UN 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development.

This one day event opens with an introductory talk given by Dr Ron Johnston (lead author for science in Textbooks for Sustainable Development:

A  Guide  to  Embedding (2017) UNESCO MGIEP  on the significant difficulties faced by mainstream education providers in achieving the sustainable development goals ( particularly SDG 4.7) as  presented in Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (United Nations (2016).     .

A following talk by Steven England (Gaia Education practitioner, founder and director of The Art of Sustainability) considers the role of ’experiential’ approaches to education in responding to these challenges.

Gaia Education is a Key Partner to UNESCO’s Global Action Program (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development.

The afternoon sessions will follow the form of 3 parallel facilitated workshops in each of the fields noted above along with the contribution that Forest School methodologies (presented by Jackie Roby founder and director of Go Wild Education)have to make in the early stages of ESD.

Outcomes and recommendations of these workshops will be formalised and presented to education providers and stakeholders for further comment.
